Jan.24 A Day at Sea

 Sunrise 6:15 am

6:05 am - Emergency alarm sounded. On the third beep I was out of bed and getting dressed, counting the beeps and waiting for the seventh beep, the long one that means get to your muster station. The beeps stopped at six. My heart stopped racing. It was a first aid call to the dishwasher area, deck 3, zone 3. 

6:10 am - The captain’s update came on the speaker to apologize for the early wake-up. There had been a small electrical fire that was quickly dealt with. 

6:15 - With the adrenaline flowing through my body, there was no chance I would fall back asleep. I started working on my blog from the last 2 days. 

7:30 - Up to the Lido Market for breakfast. 

9:00 - To the Ocean Bar on deck 3 to join the 5K walk, On Deck For A Cause, a Holland America fundraising initiative. That distance equates to 11 laps around the deck. There were at least 120 doing the walk. 


10:00 - We left the walk with 2 1/2 laps to go in order to watch the Behind the Scene presentation in the World Stage. 

11:00 - Back to the walking track to complete our 11 laps and then to the cabin to freshen up and try to finish my blog. 

12:00 - Lunch in the dining room. Yummy grilled cheese sandwich  

1:00 - Port talk on Buenos Aires in the theatre.

2:00 - Try to work on my blog, but my eyes kept drooping.

2:15 - Nap time!

4:00 - I finally finished the blog. Now time to wash the sea spray off and get ready for the dressy night.

5:15 - Oops! We forgot to pick up our passports. Down to Guest Services to retrieve them.

5:30 - To the dining room for the Gala Dinner. We sat with 6 other passengers, 4 American and a couple from Barrie area.

7:30 - To the theatre to listen to a very good group from the UK, the Flyrights.

8:30 - To the Billboard Lounge to listen to the duelling pianos.

P9:30 - Up to the Lido deck to do some star gazing.

10:00 - Time for bed! Another great day at sea and our last one.

I was just closing our second suitcase when the Stratford Airporter arrived to take us to Toronto Pearson. We made two stops in Stratford, one for a woman who was 10 minutes lates. She is a Syrian refugee who is now working for the UN in the Ukraine and was home for a two week Christmas break. Even with the delay, we were at the airport shortly after six.  We found the business class check in desk at the far end of the terminal and then quickly made our way through security. We walked for what seemed to be miles and finally arrived at the Maple Leaf Lounge. We were denied entry because we were too early. You are only allowed in 3 hours before your flight. It was suggested that the Signature Lounge was right by our gate, so we could try there in 90 minutes. Another long walk, and we arrived at the Signature Lounge. Jan. 10 At Sea

A cruise is something you do in the Mediterranean or Caribbean, an expedition cruise is what you do in South America and Antarctica. On an expedition cruise, you can expect the unexpected. The first unexpected came this morning when the captain announced an itinerary change. Instead of some leisurely cruising through the fjords and past some glaciers, we are heading at full speed to Punta Arenas. A low front has developed west of us and is headed our way at 40 miles an hour. It is the lowest pressure system that the captain has seen in this area since he started this route over 2 years ago. After the stop in Punta Arenas, the 2 Chilean pilots onboard will find a fjord or spot behind an island where we can ride out the storm on Sunday. We will drop anchor and face into the wind and be safe.  The above photo shows the expected intensity of the storm. Green is calm, red is bad, purple is hold on tight and white is good luck! Anything under 960 millibars is considered hurricane force....

We slept in until 7 or did we wake up at our usual time of 5 EST? Our hotel room was warmer than what we are used to even though the thermostat was set to fast freeze. We showered and had the included buffet breakfast and then headed to the meeting place for our walking tour.  We chose a free off the beaten path walking tour with Tours4Tips. We met our guide Marcella at the Fine Arts Museum. There were 9 in our group including a couple from Australia who appeared to be in their 20’s, an American couple from Arizona, a German who is teaching in Ecuador, a teacher from Halifax and a woman from Switzerland now living in the US.  We first went to the markets. It is summertime in Chile so there was lots of fresh local produce. The prices were incredibly low compared to what we pay at home. Cherries were in abundance at 1000 pesos ($1.43 CAD) per kg.  Strawberries were displayed artistically at 2000 pesos for 2 kg. Marcella told us about a popular dish called pastel de choclo m...
